‘Excellence’ for UH-Hilo
UH-Hilo’s first athletic competition of the school year doesn’t come until next weekend, but the Vulcans already have earned an accolade.
UHH served its community during the pandemic, according to the NCAA, which last week named the Vulcans as a finalist for the Award of Excellence According to a release, the honor “exemplifies the Division II philosophy, identity, community engagement and student-athlete leadership.”
UHH and Concordia were each selected from the Pacific West Conference and earned $500 apiece as being named a finalist for a award that will be handed out Friday.
The NCAA recognized UHH for an effort last year in which a group of 10 – softball coach Callen Perreira, baseball coach Kallen Miyataki, women’s basketball coach David Kaneshiro, student-athletes Shelby Graber, Carolina Alfonsin, Skylar Thomas, Camille Strazzo, Macey Moen, Rustin Ho and athletic director Patrick Guillen harvested 15,000 ears of corn for a local food bank.
